LANCER BAND AND COLOR GUARD

Director’s Notes...

RATINGS FESTIVAL

I would like to thank all students, and Boosters who helped make the ratings festival a success.  I hope we all know the intent for hosting this festival . . . our schedule is so full with weekend performances throughout the second semester, it would be a scheduling nightmare to set aside another Saturday so that the Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony, and Symphonic Bands could travel to another school for the adjudication.  If we traveled on a weekday, we would be out of school all day, and have an added expense of transportation.

By hosting this event, we are able to have all of our students perform on our site, no transportation costs, little time out of class, and the comforts of being at home.  It is a win win situation.  Although we do not make money from the event, we gain so much by  being a gracious host.  For the second straight year, all the judges and participating schools said that we did such an outstanding job in hosting that they would like to come back again next year.

We did an outstanding job in both hosting and performing in the festival.  This adjudication is a measure of our success as an ensemble with prepared music and in sight-reading.  The Symphonic Band received an Excellent Rating, The Wind Symphony received a Superior Rating, and the Wind Ensemble received a Unanimous Superior Rating.

COLOR GUARD/DRUM LINE

I would like to thank the staff, students and Boosters helping with both our Color Guard and Drum Line program this spring season.  As we enter the last month of competition, I wish them much success as they work towards the upcoming competitions.

AM/PM JAZZ

We are now heading into the competitive season with the Jazz Program.  Our first competition is April 5 at Fullerton College.  The AM Jazz Band will be performing at that event.  The PM will make its first performance at the Spring Concert on April 15.

RECRUITING

The recruiting for our department has gone smoothly.  Nancy Skewes-Cox, Boosters, and I have visited both Los Cerritos and Redwood.  We were able to answer questions about scheduling and help with input for the upcoming performance calendar.  We look forward to the orientation meetings coming this June.

FIELD SHOW

Our musical arranger, Key Poulan, has had our musical and thematic outline for the last six weeks.  We look forward to receiving the score back and being able to present the show concept to the students in the near future.  Discussions have already started on the design of props and costuming.

WISH LIST

At the request of Mr. Benedek, one of our parents, we are putting together a “wish list” of things that our department is in need of.  So often we talk about money and funding of our budget, that we overlook other possibilities of raising goods for our department.  Please check our newsletter in May for our first published list of equipment needs for our department.

SPRING CONCERT

Our Spring Concert will take place on Tuesday, April 15 in the TOHS Performing Arts Center.  The concert will start at 7:30 and will feature in this order, PM Jazz, AM Jazz, Intermission, Symphonic Band, Wind Symphony, and Wind Ensemble.  Tickets will be available at the door.  Because our Percussion Equipment will be in transit from Dayton, Ohio, we will need help in transporting borrowed equipment from Newbury Park High School.  The equipment must be returned immediately after our concert that night.  Thank you in advance for helping with the packing and transporting of this equipment.

SEASON CELEBRATION

The Color Guard and Drum Line will be performing for the last time of the season, their competitive shows in our Gym on April 30 at 7pm.  The Redwood Color Guard, and the Wednesday Color Guard Class will join them in performance.  Free to the Public.

ADDED CALENDAR EVENTS FOR MAY

The Wind Ensemble has been selected as one of three in Southern California to perform for the Orange County Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, May 20 and for the First California State University-Channel Islands Commencement on May 23.

In conclusion, I would like to thank all of you for wishing me a happy birthday.  It really meant a lot to me.  See you at the Concert.

Mr. Martone

President’s Corner

Dear Booster Families:

Spring competition season continues.  The Winter Guard and Spring Drum Line have had many weekend competitions.  Each group continues to improve their scores and place well.  Please cheer them and the Jazz Band on as they continue to compete through out April at various venues. We especially wish Drum Line good luck as they travel to Dayton, Ohio, Color Guard as they compete at Championships in San Diego and the Jazz Band as they attend the Reno Jazz Festival the first of May. Please see the calendar for all of their competition dates.

The Recital Concert on March 4 was very impressive.  We certainly have many talented musicians.  But you already know that because they are your children!

Our Strawberry sale at the Booster Meeting was berrylicious!  Thank you Melody for planning it and going up to Oxnard, twice! to pick up strawberries.

Our SCSBOA Ratings Festival that we hosted on March 25 was outstanding.  We had 15 groups attend.  Our very own students had very successful performances.  Symphonic Band received an Excellent rating, Wind Symphony received a Superior rating and the Wind Ensemble received a Unanimous Superior rating. Thank you to Marty and Mary Anne Martone, Betsy Connolly and Shari Smith for planning this wonderful day. Thanks also to all the students and parents who volunteered their time to make the event a success.  A special thank you to Mr. Martone for directing these fabulous performances. Congratulations to all!

April will be a short month due to Spring Break, however, we will be busy as usual.  Our Spring Concert is at 7:30pm Tuesday, April 15th in the Performing Arts Center at TOHS. Please plan to attend so that we may beam with pride as our students perform.  This is also a fundraiser for the Boosters in an effort to meet our budget.  Bring, family, friends and neighbors and let’s sell out.  The PAC seats 400.

April 30 – May 4 is Conejo Valley Days.  We will have our Churro Booth at the Carnival Site all five days.  Please sign up for a shift.  It’s really fun to be part of the excitement at the Carnival.  The Parade is Saturday, May 3 our students will be performing in that event.

Please support our restaurant nights this month; Subway on Tuesday, April 8 and Baja Fresh, Wednesday, April 16.

See you at the Booster Meeting, Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at 7:30pm.  Please note this is a week earlier than usual due to the Spring Concert and Spring Break.

Musically yours,

Lynne Phillips

 “Don’t Fret!”

Reserve your Spring Concert Tickets in Advance

Tickets for the Spring Concert on Tuesday, April 15 go on sale Monday, April 7.  You can pre-order reserved seats this year.  Cost for reserved seats is $10/ticket.  General admission is $8 at the door.  The two dollars extra for the reserved seats will help close our budget deficit this year and hopefully will meet the needs of Booster families.  Reserved seats will be available in all areas of the Performing Arts Center.  Fill out the form below to order your tickets.  Completed order forms with a check made payable to TOHS Band Boosters should be placed in the White Box in the Band

Room no later than 3pm on Friday, April 11.

Band Council Notes

The Band Banquet is set for Friday, June 6 at the Calabasas Inn at 6pm.  This annual event features a slide show of the past year and highlights student achievements throughout the year.  Tickets for the banquet will go on sale on May 1 during the lunch hour.  The price is yet to be determined, but due to the fundraising efforts of the Council this year they have a very healthy account balance and that will help defray the cost of tickets.  Speaking of the slide show, Heather Burns, Council President, is requesting that any photos you want to have considered for the slide show  be turned into in the shoebox by the computer in the Band Room as soon as possible.  Make sure your name is on the back of the picture.  If you have photos on discs that is even better.

Thanks to Council for all their hard work this year.  You’ve done a great job!

Congratulations go to Hannah Tessendorf who recently competed in the Hart High School Drum Major Competition.  She placed second in Mace Masters and third in Field Conducting II.  Good job, Hannah!!

Heather Burns received a Senior Medallion in the piano testing process called the Certificate of Merit.  Each year a student plays memorized musical selections before a judge, takes a music theory test and a listening test.  Due to her outstanding performance and rating Heather has been invited to play at the state convention of piano teachers. This invitation signifies that Heather represents the top two percent of students who participate in the Certificate of Merit in California.  What an honor.  Congratulations, Heather!!

PARADE UPDATE

With the Conejo Valley Days Parade less than a month away, take a minute to locate your band uniform.   Make sure all the parts and pieces are there so you will look your best that day.  The parade is on Saturday, May 3. You will receive detailed information on call time and the day’s schedule from the Band Office closer to the event.  Make sure you have your alternate uniform ready as well.  If you are missing anything, please call Linda Heckendorf, 499-6029 for help.

As the year draws to a close we are looking toward next season and we are in need of people to sew shoe bags for our incoming freshmen.  Booster alum, Martha DeBerg, has graciously donated fabric to the band for this project.  The bags are simple to make and come complete with instructions.  Please help Linda get this fabric out of her laundry room and ready for our new students.  Give her a call if you can help.

Jazz Band Bound for Reno

The AM Jazz Band will leave for Reno on early  Friday morning, May 2 and will return on Sunday, May 4.  Every student should have received a packet with trip information by now.  If you have not gotten yours please contact the VP of Jazz Band, Gloria Paul, 496-7257.  PLEASE REMEMBER BLACK

T-SHIRTS ONLY!!

Nominating Committee Update

The slate of officers for the 2003-2004 school year is all but complete.  We still need to fill the Special Events and Publicity chair positions.  Don’t forget you can share a position.  Please contact Polly Toohey at 523-2569 if you would like details on how you can serve our group next year!

SCRIP SCRIBBLES

Just a little reminder for you senior families out there.  Once your student has left our program you can continue to support us by having your  e-scrip go to the Band Boosters and you can continue to buy scrip from us.

Remember, too, the more scrip you buy the fewer fundraisers we need.  Dorothy Hatfield handles paper scrip, any questions call her at 529-5819.

Mary Tessendorf handles National Scrip.  Enclosed in an updated order form with all the latest vendors available and the percentage that is credited to your account.  Call Mary before Tuesday mornings to place an order, 492-5795.
