Discovery Arts Concert Features TOHS Band Student

One of our own will be performing with the New West Symphony in the Discovery Artists Concert on January 18 at the Kalvi Theater at the Civic Arts Plaza.  Each year the New West Symphony sponsors a contest to discover new, up and coming talent.  This year French horn player David Feldman was one of four young adults chosen to perform with the New West Symphony.  David will be performing a 17 minute solo from the Strauss Horn Concerto #1.  Anyone interested in attending this event can order tickets at

1-800-NEW-WEST or

www.newwestsymphony.org, click on Discovery Artists.  David would welcome all our support.  Best of luck and congratulations on this outstanding achievement, David!

The President’s Corner

Dear Booster Families:

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I hope you are all well rested and ready to have a great 2003!

December was a fun month with many musical events.  Thank you to Marty and Mary Ann Martone, staff, Shari Smith, our bake sale moms and their helpers, and Camden Lorentson and the stage crew for making the winter concerts such a huge success. Our concert nights made over $2200.00.  Carolers brought in over $1700.00 for the ASB account.  There were many happy households who had the pleasure of hearing our carolers.  Thanks to our Brass Quintet for caroling at OSH Hardware Store in Thousand Oaks on December 20.  OSH donated $50.00 to the band and shoppers were generous with their donations as well.  Great job guys!   Thank you to Betsy Connolly for organizing our caroling social.  We had lots of cookies, cocoa, Mrs. Martone’s 40th birthday cake and fun.  Thanks also to the Connolly’s for opening their home for the Student Holiday party.  They had a blast!  Also in December, the Jazz Band performed at the TOHS Blue Ribbon Ceremony at the Ronald Reagan Library hosted by The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation.  The Jazz Band and vocals by Mrs. Martone gave a crowd pleasing performance.  Our superintendent, Dr. Robert Fraisse, was very impressed! Dr. Fraisse said to me that “usually you either get a great conductor or a teacher that’s great with students, you are so fortunate to have both with Mr. Martone.  I hear such wonderful things about your program and him.”  Thank you Dr. Fraisse, we agree!!

Our AdBooks were delivered in December.  Wow!  What a great band year book.  It’s full of wonderful pictures and special tributes done by Cathy Philipp.  You out did yourself Cathy, thank you so much for all the long hours and dedication.  Thank you, too, to Penny Hunter for organizing and running a very successful AdBook campaign.  Thanks to all the families and vendors for your support.  I know many families made a lot of money for their student accounts.  The students who participated made $7,077 for their accounts and the Booster budget benefited by $10,644.00.

The month of January is an organizing month and a time of preparation.  The students are preparing for auditions and finals.  Good Luck!  The Color Guard and Drumline are preparing their shows.  The Boosters are organizing another big important fundraiser:  our ever-popular Dinner Dance.  The diner Dance and Silent/Live Auction will be held at The Clarion Palm Garden Hotel/Eric’s Restaurant in Newbury Park, Saturday, February 1, 2003.  Dinner will be accompanied by our own Jazz Band.  Buy your tickets early.  More details are in the Bugle.  Melody Fouse and her dedicated helpers are planning a momentous event.  Don’t miss out on the event of the year.

I would also like to mention that on Saturday, January 18, 2003, the New West Symphony/Discovery Artists Concert will be held at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza Kavli Auditorium.  David Feldman is one of the Discovery Artists, a great honor and some of our band students perform with the New West Symphony.  Tickets may still be available at the Civic Arts Plaza box office.

Lastly, it is imperative that those of you who haven’t done so yet, please pay your fall expenses.

I hope to see you at our Booster Meeting on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 at 7:30pm in the Band Room.  It’s also Subway night!

Musically yours,

Lynne Phillips

Website Update

The new and improved TOHS Lancer Band and Color Guard website is up and running.  You can find a copy of the latest Bugle along with weekly write-ups from our Booster President there.  Our calendar section is great and is continually updated with all of the upcoming events.  The website is based on volunteer input.  There is still a lot of work to do and we would love to have more website content from our Boosters.  If you have any written articles, pictures, videos, or sound bites that you would like to donate, please e-mail Jeff Noli, the Webmaster, at webmaster@tohsband.org.  If you have any questions and need to speak to Jeff, please call him at 492-8381.  Thanks to Jeff for doing such and outstanding job this year with the website!

JAZZ BAND WOWS SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Jazz Band played at the TOHS National Blue Ribbon School Ceremony held at the Ronald Regan Library in December.  The Jazz Band is just one reason that TOHS is a National Blue Ribbon School.  Everyone enjoyed their outstanding performance.  Thanks to all the students and to the Martones!

The Color Guard Tournament is scheduled for Friday, February 21 (this is a date change).  Edith Hauger, 531-9773, and the Guard are looking for people to help organize and run this fundraiser.  Talk to Edith about how you can help.

Do you know any junior high students who might be interested in a “career” in the Color Guard in high school?  All 6th, 7th and 8th grade Conejo Valley Unified School District students are

invited to learn about the art of Color Guard.  Classes begin on January 8 in the TOHS Girls’ Activity Room.  Classes will be held from 5-6pm for 6th and 7th graders and from 5-6:30pm for 8th graders and include instruction in movemnt, flag, rifle and saber.  Call Mrs. Martone, 495-7491, ext. 6002 for more info.  It is not too late to join!  No prior experience necessary to attend!

Pancake Breakfast

Update

The pancake Breakfast has been postponed.  Watch the Bugle for details later this spring.

Scrip Always Available

National Scrip is again available from Mary Tessendorf.  All orders must be placed with Mary by Tuesday mornings via the Band Office White Box or by dropping it off at the box in front of her home, 2657 Castillo Circle (this is the most direct way).  If you are interested in ordering Arco scrip, please order with a separate form and check.  Contact Dorothy Hatfield for paper scrip.

See’s Candy...Going, going….gone…

See’s Candy has had to raise the price of a case of candy.  Mrs. Martone order 10 cases at the old price and after that, we will not be getting any more. To all the students who have found this to be an effective fundraiser, take advantage of these last few boxes.  Because when it is gone, it’s gone!
